I no sooner get done writing a post about Paul Ryan being a stone cold liar when I read another article about him lying. This time, in a campaign speech, he blamed President Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his home town of Janesville, WI. The problem is, though, that he plant closed in 2008 while George W. Bush was president. http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/08/paul-ryan-slams-obama-for-not-saving-auto-plant—-in-2008.php.
This couldn’t have been inadvertent. It’s his hometown, for crying out loud! Not only that, he blamed high gas prices for the shuttering of the SUV plant. Those gas prices were set during the time before the plant closed, which would have been between 2004 and 2009 when Republicans controlled the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.
What is truly bizarre about Ryan’s speech, though, is that Ryan, Mr. free enterprise and small government, is apparently contending that the government didn’t do enough to bail out the auto industry. Not only that, but the guy he’s running with, Willard Mitt Romney, famously wrote an editorial in 2008 entitled, “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.” http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/19/opinion/19romney.html?_r=1
So, is he admitting that all of his small government positions are garbage? Is he arguing that his running mate doesn’t know squat about the role of government in the economy? It is hard to say, because one thing we do know is, if he is talking, it’s probably a lie.
